In a heartfelt announcement that has sent ripples through the Illinois high school basketball community, Mount Pulaski girls basketball coach Ryan McVickers has resigned, effective Monday, May 4. The decision, made with a heavy heart, stems from a deeply personal family matter: McVickers's 6-year-old son has been diagnosed with a rare disease, requiring more of his time and attention.
"The decision comes with a heavy heart," McVickers shared in a letter posted on the IL SportsWire Facebook page, a move confirmed by athletic director Joel Washko. "Over the past six years, this program, our players, and this community have meant so much to me. Coaching these young women has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, and it is incredibly difficult to step away."
McVickers leaves behind an impressive legacy on the court. Under his leadership, the Hilltoppers soared to new heights, making their second-ever state appearance this past season and finishing as Class 1A runners-up with a stellar 33-2 record. Over six seasons—including a shortened COVID-19 year—he compiled a remarkable 138-38 record, along with two additional regional titles.
But beyond the wins, McVickers emphasized the bonds formed with his players. "This program will always hold a special place in my heart. As I step away, I will continue to watch and cheer on these girls with pride, knowing the program is in great hands and the future is bright. Thank you for everything."
The coaching vacancy has already been posted on the Illinois Association of School Administrators job bank, with applications due by May 15. For now, the Mount Pulaski community rallies around its departing coach, understanding that family always comes first.
