The Morris Knolls Golden Eagles have etched their names into the history books. For the first time ever, this powerhouse program has secured back-to-back Morris County tournament championships—a feat no senior class before them had achieved.
In a thrilling, back-and-forth battle at Landing Park in Roxbury, Morris Knolls edged out Morris Catholic 10-9 on May 8. The victory caps a remarkable run for a senior group that already boasts three sectional titles and two group final appearances. Now, they own something truly unique: consecutive county crowns.
"County tournaments are special," said head coach Keith Heinemann. "They're more intimate than state tournaments. You're playing your neighbors. Those are some of the best teams we will see all season long, and it gives us the confidence with states coming up."
The game came down to the wire. With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, freshman Kendall Rady stepped to the plate. Her sacrifice fly brought Julia Fox racing home, sealing the 10-9 victory and earning Morris Knolls its eighth county title overall.
"I just knew I had to come in big and strong and couldn't doubt myself in this moment," Rady said. "I just really wanted to do it for the seniors. They deserve this, and we had this opportunity."
The Golden Eagles came out swinging, scoring in each of the first three innings. Fox and Kaylee Rolph each drove in two runs in the opening frame, with Rolph lacing a two-run triple to give Morris Knolls a 4-0 lead. Fox added another RBI in her next at-bat, pushing the advantage to 5-0 after two innings.
"It has been a huge rush of adrenaline," Fox said. "Everything that we have done for the last 24 hours and, honestly, this entire season has led to this moment."
But Morris Catholic refused to back down. In the top of the third, they loaded the bases on an error, a hit batter, and a single. Gia Bonsignore delivered a two-run base hit, putting the Crusaders on the board and igniting a rally that would keep fans on the edge of their seats until the final pitch.
