Mookie Betts is on the verge of making his long-awaited return to the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup, and fans couldn't be more excited. The star outfielder has been sidelined for over five weeks after suffering an oblique injury while rounding the bases during the team's first road trip in Washington. What initially seemed like a minor setback turned into a more extended absence after further imaging revealed the need for time on the injured list.
But the wait is almost over. According to team insider Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic, Betts is expected to begin a short rehabilitation stint with Triple-A Oklahoma City before being activated. If all goes well, he could rejoin the Dodgers as early as Monday for their matchup against the San Francisco Giants. The plan is for Betts to travel to Los Angeles on Sunday after playing Friday and Saturday in the minors.
Betts took a major step forward on Thursday, facing live pitching for the first time during the team's day off. The session went smoothly, paving the way for his rehab assignment. He noted that he turned a corner last week, feeling better in his recovery and body, which has him lined up for a return soon.
"There's no magic formula to this," Betts said. "You can do as much rehab and stuff as you want. Things just take time. It's always four to six weeks no matter however you want to twist it. I think we're kind of approaching the four-week mark, so once I get to that point is when I'll really turn the corner the most. So close."
Betts' return will trigger a ripple effect on the Dodgers' roster. Hyeseong Kim, who stepped in for Betts, has impressed with his hitting and could still have a role. Alex Freeland is another prospect the organization values highly. However, Santiago Espinal appears to be the most likely candidate to be moved down when Betts is activated. The picture gets even more complicated with the anticipated returns of Kike Hernandez and Tommy Edman down the line, promising some tough decisions for the Dodgers' front office.
For now, all eyes are on Betts as he gears up to bring his elite bat and glove back to the diamond. Whether you're a Dodgers fan or just love watching one of the game's best, this comeback is one to watch.
