MONROE, Mich. – When St. Mary Catholic Central softball coach Dani Emery stepped onto the field against Monroe High on May 5-6, it was more than just another doubleheader—it was a reunion with her former mentor. Monroe coach Mickey Moody coached Emery in high school at Jefferson, and later had her as an assistant at Dundee during the Vikings' state championship run in 2013. So, watching her Falcons sweep the Trojans 7-0 and 12-1 was a sweet moment for the second-year head coach.

But for Emery, the real victory was seeing her team's recent surge continue, improving to 14-9 on the season. "We're doing a good job of stepping up the intensity and putting the pieces together," she said. "Both pitchers threw well today—they were really spinning the ball. And our defense was great. They communicated well."

Olivia Piepsney led the charge, tossing a one-hitter in the opener and then crushing a home run in the nightcap. Hayden Southerland also went deep, adding to the Falcons' offensive fireworks. It was a complete performance that showcased the team's growing chemistry and confidence as the postseason approaches.

Across the county, the Tri-County Conference track and field championships delivered their own drama. Summerfield's girls captured their first league title since 1990, powered by Makenzie Wolfe's wins in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. The Bulldogs racked up 151 points, outpacing runner-up Erie Mason (121) and third-place Whiteford (105). Elena Miller (shot put) and Abby Zilka (high jump) also claimed individual titles, while Allison Ost and Abby Raymond added key second-place finishes. Erie Mason's Guiliana Nastale was a standout, winning the 100, 200, and 400 meters and anchoring the victorious 400 relay. Whiteford's Briar Wing (800) and Nina Bauman (discus) also earned gold.

On the boys' side, Erie Mason wrapped up the conference championship with a dominant 190.5 points, well ahead of Whiteford's 153.5. Logan Doom was a double winner in the 800 and 1,600 meters, while Lincoln Murbach swept the hurdles. Caleb Healey (3,200) and Jackson Carner (long jump) added to Mason's haul. Whiteford's Nate Andrews (200), Jess Saylor (400), Brek Ruddy (pole vault), and Ryan Thomas (high jump) all won events, and the Bobcats swept all four relays—but it wasn't enough to catch the Eagles. Summerfield finished fourth with 52 points.

From emotional softball sweeps to historic track titles, the Monroe County Region delivered a weekend of high school sports that reminded everyone why they love the game. Whether you're celebrating a long-awaited championship or building momentum for the playoffs, these athletes are showing what it means to compete with heart.
