It’s been a tough season for Cercle Brugge fans, to say the least. Just two years after the club celebrated a remarkable European qualification, they’ve now finished in the bottom four of the Belgian Pro League for two consecutive seasons. While the campaign hasn’t delivered the highs fans hoped for, there’s a silver lining: the team is safe from relegation and will compete in the top flight again next year. Under new manager Lars Friis, optimism is slowly returning. Friis is four games into his tenure and remains unbeaten, with the squad playing attractive, goal-scoring football. Sure, the opposition has been the league’s weakest sides, but after a difficult stretch, Cercle Brugge supporters finally have something to cheer about.

One of the brightest sparks this season has been Monaco loanee Edan Diop. The young winger has quickly become a fan favorite, thanks to his sharp technical skills and relentless work rate. Diop is also the team’s top scorer with seven goals and three assists, a stat line that highlights his growing influence. His performances are a testament to the strong partnership between Monaco and Cercle Brugge—a relationship that allows Monaco to develop their young talents through regular game time before either bringing them back to the Ligue 1 side or selling them for a solid fee.

Unlike some previous loanees from Monaco, Diop had already tasted senior football before arriving in Belgium. He made 20 first-team appearances for Monaco over several seasons, scoring once. But the move to Cercle Brugge has been a game-changer for the 21-year-old. Regular minutes have been key: Diop has started 30 of 32 league matches this season, a luxury he rarely enjoyed at Monaco. That consistent playing time has accelerated his development, turning him into one of the more dangerous attacking players in the Belgian Pro League.

According to FotMob data, Diop ranks in the top 17% for chances created among players in his position in Belgium, while his goal output places him in the top 8%. His willingness to shoot sets him apart too—he takes more attempts than 88% of his positional peers. Diop, who is also eligible to represent Senegal internationally, is set to return to Monaco this summer with a contract that runs until 2028. A second loan spell in Brugge seems unlikely, but his breakout season has certainly put him on the radar for bigger things ahead.
