MM 5.15: Maryland football adds transfer running back Terrez Worthy

This is the Maryland Minute, a short story followed by a roundup of Terps-related news.

Maryland football is making serious moves to fix its run game, and the latest addition could be a game-changer. After finishing dead last in the Big Ten with just 1,252 rushing yards and 305 attempts in 2025, the Terps have been on a mission to reload their backfield and take the pressure off quarterback Malik Washington.

Enter Terrez Worthy—a senior running back who committed to Maryland on Thursday after transferring from Temple. Worthy isn't just any transfer; he's a two-time NJCAA All-American who led the junior college ranks with a staggering 1,492 rushing yards in his final season at Lackawanna College. The Salisbury, Maryland native made an immediate impact with the Owls, showcasing his versatility as both a runner and receiver. In 2024, he racked up 480 total yards from scrimmage and hauled in 16 receptions before stepping away from the team last season for personal reasons.

But Worthy's explosiveness isn't limited to the backfield. He also served as Temple's primary kick returner, averaging a blistering 39.1 yards per return on 23 attempts. That kind of speed could give Maryland a spark on special teams, even if his role there is limited behind the Terps' existing return options.

Worthy joins a revamped running back room that already includes USC transfer Harry Dalton III, who arrived in February, along with returning backs DeJuan Williams and Iverson Howard. With Williams expected to lead the group, Worthy will battle for carries in what's shaping up to be a competitive and promising depth chart—exactly what Maryland needs to turn its ground game around.

In other Terps news: No. 3-seed Maryland women's lacrosse held off Navy 14-10 to advance to the NCAA Tournament semifinals, while Maryland baseball stumbled in its series opener against Penn State, losing 13-3. On the football front, VMI transfer Stephen Dean III also committed to the Terps, adding depth to the linebacker room.
