The Texas Rangers find themselves in a familiar position as the MLB trade deadline approaches: stuck in the middle of the pack in a surprisingly competitive AL West. With just 5.5 games separating the first-place Athletics from the last-place Astros, every move counts—and one MLB insider believes the Rangers should focus on adding bats, not subtracting arms.
FanSided's Robert Murray recently weighed in on the speculation surrounding Texas's star pitchers, Jacob deGrom and Nathan Eovaldi. Despite whispers that the Rangers could shop one of their aces, Murray firmly disagrees. "The Rangers are absolutely still in the playoff picture and in a division that looks very winnable," Murray wrote. "They have the flexibility to move a starter after trading for MacKenzie Gore, but this is a team that wants to win with its pitching."
Murray emphasized that trading either veteran would be counterproductive. "Right now, they feel much more likely to add a bat rather than subtract from the major-league roster, let alone move one of their star pitchers. Let's put this one to bed. I just don't see it happening."
It's easy to see why. deGrom, at 38, is still dealing like it's his prime, posting a 2.01 ERA with 40 strikeouts across six starts. Eovaldi, meanwhile, has had a slower start but recently flashed his ace potential with seven scoreless innings against the New York Yankees. Losing either would be a blow to a rotation that's been the team's backbone.
For the Rangers, the math is simple: their plus-8 run differential needs a boost, and offense is the priority. With a winnable division and Wild Card hopes alive, Texas should be buyers, not sellers—and that means keeping their star pitchers right where they are.
