Alex Mitchell is "buzzing" after being named Plymouth Argyle's Supporters' Player of the Season—and for good reason. The 24-year-old central defender has been a rock at the heart of the Pilgrims' defense, featuring in 46 matches across all competitions during his season-long loan from Charlton Athletic. His consistency has been a key factor as Plymouth pushes for the final League One play-off spot, capping off a remarkable campaign for the young star.
Mitchell's approach to his loan spells has always been all-in, and this season was no different. "I've been on loan quite a few times, and my approach is to act as a permanent player, properly dive into it, and live the Plymouth life a bit," he told BBC Radio Devon. "That's what I've been doing at every loan—Lincoln, Scotland—and it's been really good over my career. To win this award on loan is special. I haven't seen a loan player win it before, so it just shows how incredible the fans have been to vote for me."
This marks Mitchell's fifth loan stint, following successful spells at Lincoln City, St Johnstone, Leyton Orient, and Bromley before he joined Charlton on a three-year deal in the summer of 2024. While he holds fond memories of his time at Lincoln, he admits this season at Plymouth has topped them all. "I really enjoyed my loan at Lincoln—that was unreal, and it'll always have a special place in my heart. But I think this has probably topped it, if I'm being honest. The way people have taken to me here, I've never seen anything like it. It just works."
Mitchell was blown away by the passion of the Plymouth faithful, describing the club as a "Premier League-supported club in League One." He added, "You don't realize how much people care about this club until you properly come down here. You hear from other lads how mad this club is, but when you actually experience it, it's a different ball game. On the pitch, it's the most I've ever played, and every game has felt important. It's been brilliant."
