In a move that surprised few, Minnesota United has officially parted ways with Colombian superstar James Rodríguez, releasing the veteran playmaker so he can fully focus on his national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The decision, announced Wednesday, brings a short and largely unremarkable MLS chapter to a close for the 34-year-old.
Rodríguez signed with the Loons back in February on a short-term deal running through June, with a club option to extend through the end of the year. At the time, the former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich star spoke passionately about his new adventure. "I'm very happy for this new chapter in my life," he said. "I hope to be at my best so I can bring joy to this city and to all of the people who are putting their faith in me."
But the on-field magic never quite materialized. In eight appearances for Minnesota—only three of which were starts—Rodríguez failed to find the back of the net and managed just two assists. It was a far cry from the dazzling form that made him a household name during the 2014 World Cup, where he won the Golden Boot.
Now, with the World Cup set to be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada this summer, Rodríguez will link up with Colombia's national team camp. In a statement, Minnesota United expressed full support for the decision: "The club is proud to support James as he represents his country on the world's biggest stage and wishes him success during camp and throughout the tournament."
As for what comes next, Rodríguez recently dismissed retirement rumors, telling Apple TV+ that speculation about his post-World Cup plans was simply "for winning views." Whether he returns to MLS, heads back to Europe, or explores another league remains to be seen—but for now, all eyes are on his quest to lead Colombia deep into the tournament.
