Laura Stacey's hat trick gave the Montreal Victoire a chance, but the defending champion Minnesota Frost came away with the overtime win in the first game of their playoff series.

In a thrilling, hard-fought opener to their semi-final series, the defending champion Minnesota Frost edged the Montreal Victoire 5-4 in overtime, proving that playoff hockey brings a whole new level of intensity. Jincy Roese's blast from the point at 4:30 of the extra period sealed the win, overcoming a remarkable hat trick from Montreal's Laura Stacey in a game that had everything—penalties, drama, and a hostile crowd stunned into silence.

The regular-season storylines were flipped on their head. Montreal hadn't lost at Place Bell in regulation all year, only falling once in overtime, and had won six straight against Minnesota. But the Frost came out looking like a different team in the postseason. Katy Knoll set the tone early, outskating Jessica DiGirolamo to get her stick on a pass from Klára Hymlárová and lifting it high over Ann-Renée Desbiens' stick side at 8:36 of the first period.

Penalties and special teams dominated the opening frame, with four calls made. Kendall Coyne Schofield made Montreal pay at 16:16, squeezing a puck through Desbiens' pads to give Minnesota a 2-0 lead and silencing the home crowd. It was a rare power-play goal against a Montreal team that hadn't allowed one at home since January.

The Frost nearly made it 3-0 in the second when Taylor Heise was stopped on a breakaway by Desbiens, but the Victoire pushed back. Shiann Darkangelo cleaned up a Kati Tabin rebound under Maddie Rooney to cut the lead to one. Scrums after whistles, goalies losing their helmets, and near-fights showed just how much these two teams dislike each other.

Laura Stacey finally drew Montreal even at 17:49, wrapping a puck around and through Rooney to bring the crowd to life. But just 46 seconds later, Grace Zumwinkle responded with a go-ahead goal, showing no one was backing down. It was only the second time all season Desbiens had allowed more than three goals, but the Frost's resilience—and Roese's overtime heroics—proved that playoff Minnesota is built for these moments.
