Rookie defender Mimi Van Zanten scored a header goal in the 81st minute, giving San Diego Wave FC a 2-1 win over Angel City FC. This was the 21-year-old's first career goal.

In a thrilling Southern California showdown, rookie defender Mimi Van Zanten etched her name into the spotlight with a dramatic 81st-minute header that propelled San Diego Wave FC to a 2-1 victory over Angel City FC at BMO Stadium. The 21-year-old Jamaican, who has started all nine games this season, scored her first professional goal in style—delivering a moment that will surely be remembered by fans and teammates alike.

The win snapped San Diego's two-game losing streak and showcased the team's resilience. Dudinha played a pivotal role with two goal contributions, helping the Wave improve to a 6-3-0 record and claim the second-most points in the NWSL (18), trailing only the Portland Thorns. It was a much-needed bounce-back after consecutive losses—first to Portland, which ended their five-game win streak, and then a tough 1-0 defeat at home to Bay FC on May 2.

That match against Bay FC also saw head coach Jonas Eidevall sent off after expressing frustration over a referee decision that interrupted a fast break. Assistant coach Becki Tweed stepped in for the remainder of that game and continued to lead the team while Eidevall served his suspension. Tweed made strategic adjustments for the Angel City match, swapping midfielders Gia Corley and Kimmi Ascanio for Lia Godfrey and Laurina Fazer, while DiDi Haracic returned to the starting lineup after recovering from an injury that had sidelined her for weeks.

Angel City, meanwhile, entered the match on a three-game losing streak, having fallen to Orlando (2-1), Portland (2-1), and Utah (1-0). Cloé Lacasse's 32nd-minute goal had secured the win for the Royals, while forward Sveindís Jónsdóttir remains their top scorer with three goals this season. Despite a strong start to the season with three straight wins, Angel City has struggled to maintain momentum.

The first half remained scoreless, thanks in large part to a spectacular save from Haracic in the 38th minute. Taylor Suarez broke through the San Diego defense, and a ball that slipped past both center-backs left Kennedy Wesley scrambling. Suarez found herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but Haracic stood tall, making a terrific block to keep the game level.

With both teams searching for an edge, it was Van Zanten's timely header that ultimately decided the contest—a moment that not only lifted San Diego but also signaled the arrival of a rising star in the NWSL.
