The Milwaukee Bucks are facing a franchise-defining decision, and they're not wasting any time. Co-owner Jimmy Haslam made it clear during the team's May 6 press conference—where Taylor Jenkins was formally introduced as the new head coach—that the Bucks will decide Giannis Antetokounmpo's future by the NBA draft, set for June 23-24. The message was direct: either trade the two-time MVP or build around him.
This marks a sharp shift from last season, when the locker room and organization had to navigate constant trade rumors surrounding Antetokounmpo. Haslam didn't mince words about the timeline. "I just think before the draft is a natural time," he said. "If Giannis does play somewhere else, we ought to get a lot of assets. That's Jon's job to do. And if he's here, you build the team differently." He also took a moment to address recent speculation, adding, "Our relationship with him—despite what is reported by certain ESPN writers—is very positive."
While the looming decision on Antetokounmpo's future dominated the conversation, Jenkins did get a chance to share his vision for the team. The former Bucks assistant and Memphis Grizzlies head coach outlined his plans for re-establishing a winning culture and emphasized his partnership with general manager Jon Horst. Still, Jenkins acknowledged that the franchise's direction—with or without its superstar—was a central topic during his lengthy discussions with Haslam, co-owner Wes Edens, and Horst.
"It's a big one," Haslam said of the decision. "And you gotta get it right. Jon knows it, Wes knows it. We didn't hold back with Taylor. We just said, listen, he may or may not be with us."
For Bucks fans, the next few weeks will be pivotal. Whether the team pivots toward a rebuild with a haul of assets or doubles down on its championship core, one thing is certain: the NBA draft will set the stage for Milwaukee's next chapter.
