"He straight up said, 'just hang out with him,'" Armstrong recalls with a laugh. "There's absolutely no chance this kid's coming to school."

That kid was Mike Trout, a raw but electric outfielder from New Jersey. Long before NCAA recruiting rules changed, Godwin had been ahead of the curve, expressing interest in Trout when he was still in eighth grade.

"I was in eighth grade, and he came to see me. I had a really good game, and we just kept in contact," Trout remembers. "Then once I got to freshman year [in high school] … he told me, 'Hey, you're our guy – you're gonna be playing center field.'"

Trout built a strong relationship with Godwin and remained committed to East Carolina even as bigger programs came calling. "It got interesting, no doubt," Trout admits. "But I was committed there, and nothing really persuaded me any other way."

By his senior year of high school, Trout had emerged as one of the nation's top prospects, making it likely he'd skip college for the pros. Still, he honored his visit to the program that believed in him first—a testament to the loyalty that has defined his career.
