For nearly two decades, the Pittsburgh Steelers stood as the gold standard for NFL stability. Mike Tomlin was the man holding it all together. After 19 seasons, one of the most decorated coaching tenures in league history came to a close following the 2025 season.
The Steelers went 10-7 and bowed out in the Wild Card round to the Houston Texans in January 2026. That’s when Tomlin made the call to step away from the sidelines, ending an era that never saw him post a losing season.

But what drove the decision? Tomlin opened up about it during a recent appearance on NBC’s “NBA Showtime,” and his answer carried more weight than most expected.
“There’s a loneliness with leadership. I just thought it was a good time for me, personally. And by that, I mean just where I am in life. And I thought it was a good time for the organization, to be quite honest with you. We didn’t have a lot of success in the playoffs in recent years.” Tomlin said (via Matthew Luciow).
Tomlin thinks a new direction could give the locker room what it needs right now. He pointed to respected veterans like Cam Heyward, T.J. Watt and Chris Boswell, saying players of that caliber deserved the energy and optimism that often comes with new leadership.
NBC officially confirmed that Tomlin will join “Football Night in America” as a studio analyst. He made it clear the move took time and thought, not something he rushed into.

Tomlin sounded energized about the new role, which includes traveling in 2026 with “FNIA,” the pregame show that leads into NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” coverage.
His coaching resume still carries serious weight. Tomlin won Super Bowl XLIII in just his second season with Pittsburgh and returned to the Super Bowl two years later.
The Steelers have not won a playoff game since the 2016 postseason. Even so, Tomlin led the franchise to the playoffs in 13 of his 19 seasons. That kind of consistency doesn’t happen by accident.
