Big changes are happening in East Lansing as Michigan State basketball bids farewell to Divine Ugochukwu. The versatile combo guard, who spent just one season with the Spartans, is reportedly heading to LSU, according to On3.com.
Ugochukwu, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound guard originally from Sugar Land, Texas, came to Michigan State last May after a stint at Miami (Florida). He quickly made an impact, averaging 5.1 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.5 assists while starting 12 games for Tom Izzo's squad. Unfortunately, his season was cut short by a foot injury suffered at Minnesota on Feb. 4, which required surgery and sidelined him for the remainder of the year. He entered the transfer portal on April 22 and still has two years of eligibility left.
This departure comes on the heels of a strong 2024-25 campaign for the Spartans, who finished 27-8 and advanced to the Sweet 16. Izzo had originally brought Ugochukwu in to help fill the void left by Jase Richardson and Tre Holloman after the previous season.
Meanwhile, the Spartans are also keeping a close eye on Jeremy Fears Jr., their rising fourth-year junior and All-American point guard. Fears, a first-team All-Big Ten selection, will test his NBA draft stock at the Scouting Combine in Chicago from May 10-17, all while maintaining his college eligibility.
To shore up the roster after losing Ugochukwu, along with graduates Trey Fort and Denham Wojcik, Michigan State is bringing in a promising freshman class. Four-star recruits Carlos Medlock Jr. (point guard) and Jasiah Jervis (shooting guard) are set to join the program. The Spartans also expect to return Jordan Scott (sophomore) and Kur Teng (junior), plus welcome back wing Kaleb Glenn, who missed the 2025-26 season due to injury after transferring last spring.
As the transfer portal continues to reshape college basketball, Michigan State fans will be watching closely to see how Izzo and his staff adjust for next season.
