The Michigan softball team came up short in an extra-inning pitchers duel in its first NCAA Tournament game in the Oklahoma regional.

The Michigan softball team faced a heartbreaking 1-0 loss in extra innings against Kansas in their first NCAA Tournament game at the Oklahoma regional on Friday. The pitchers' duel at Love Field saw the Wolverines (34-21) come up just short in the bottom of the eighth inning, leaving them in a must-win situation to keep their postseason hopes alive.

Now, Michigan needs to win two games on Saturday to advance to Sunday's regional final. It's a tough spot, but the Wolverines have shown resilience all season. They'll face Binghamton at 5:30 p.m., and if they win, they'll take on the loser of the Oklahoma-Kansas game at 8 p.m.

Oklahoma, the No. 3 overall seed and a perennial softball powerhouse, dominated Binghamton 11-0 in the first regional game. The Sooners will now face Kansas in Saturday's opener, setting up a challenging path for Michigan.

This loss stings especially because Michigan had beaten Kansas earlier this season, coming from behind with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to win 4-2 during the USF Invitational in February. But Friday's game was a different story. Wolverines pitcher Gabby Ellis battled through 7.1 innings, allowing six hits and just one run. Kansas pitcher Lila Partridge matched her, going eight innings with six hits allowed.

The decisive moment came in the bottom of the eighth. With no outs, Kansas's Hailey Cripe drew a walk, and a double to left-center moved her to third. After a walk loaded the bases, Ava Wallace singled to left-center, scoring Cripe for the game-winning run.

Michigan's offense struggled to find its rhythm. First-team All-Big Ten selection Lauren Putz went 2-for-4, but the Wolverines' third and fourth batters combined for an 0-for-8 day. Michigan left seven runners stranded, a statistic that proved costly in such a tight game.

For softball fans, this regional is shaping up to be a classic. Michigan will need to bring their A-game on Saturday—and maybe a little extra gear to stay comfortable through a doubleheader. Whether you're cheering from the stands or watching from home, it's going to be an exciting day of softball.
