Though not discussed as one of Michigan football's big instant impact transfers, former Memphis and UAB safety Chris Bracy has that opportunity to be not only a starter, but someone who comes onto the national scene in a big way.

Last year with the Tigers, Bracy was third on the team with 81 tackles, impressive from the safety position. He also had 9.5 tackles for loss and nine passes broken up. It was a giant leap after having done nothing of note at UAB the two years previous.

But after his breakout year with Memphis, he hopes will shine through now that he's in the Big Ten.

Appearing on the In the Trenches podcast with Jon Jansen, Bracy shared more about his game and his aspirations now that he's joining an experienced defensive backs group in Ann Arbor.

"I would just say my instincts, just being around the ball a lot," Bracy said. "Trying to be a playmaker on this defense, I would say. Just making, create negative plays, taking the ball out the air, just getting runs down when needed to be. Just being that guy that the defense looks to to make plays."

One of new head coach Kyle Whittingham's concerns about his inherited Michigan football team is the depth at defensive back, and at the very least, Bracy should provide that. He's likely going to be paired with Rod Moore, Mason Curtis, and Jordan Young at safety, but even still, he's been bonding a bit with the cornerbacks, coming together as leaders and acknowledging that they have an opportunity as a group to make a show of it this fall.

"I've been talking to Smith Snowden a lot, Zeke (Berry), Sug -- Jyaire Hill," Bracy said. "I feel like we can be the best defensive back room in the country, honestly. Especially in the Big Ten, I feel like we got veteran guys at each position. Guys that are proven in college football, and I feel like the sky is the limit."

There is a lot of experience in the defensive backfield, so the depth will likely be more of a concern at corner, more so than safety. But with Moore's status still in question after having missed the bulk of the past two years, and with TJ Metcalf having transferred out this offseason, acquiring Bracy is big for the middle of the back-end of the defense, given what he was able to show a year ago.
