The University of North Carolina has made a monumental investment in its basketball future, officially introducing Michael Malone as its new head coach. The former NBA champion, who led the Denver Nuggets to a title in 2023, has agreed to a landmark six-year, $50 million contract to take the reins of the storied Tar Heels program.

This move marks a significant departure for Carolina, as Malone becomes the first head coach since 1952 without prior ties to the university as a player or assistant. He steps in to replace Hubert Davis, tasked with revitalizing a program hungry to return to national prominence after recent early NCAA Tournament exits.

Malone's deal immediately places him among the elite earners in college basketball, believed to be the second-highest-paid coach at a public university. The contract runs through 2032, with his salary escalating from $7.5 million in 2026-27 to a peak of $8.5 million for the final three seasons.

Beyond the base salary, the university is providing substantial resources for success. Malone will have a $4 million pool for his assistant coaches and can earn up to $1.475 million in single-season performance bonuses, underscoring the program's championship expectations.

The contract also includes a detailed buyout structure, starting at $8 million if Malone departs or is terminated before April 2027. This figure gradually decreases in subsequent years, providing long-term stability for both the coach and the program as they embark on this new era in Chapel Hill.
