The Mets' three-game winning streak came to a halt on Friday night at Citi Field, falling 5-2 to Cam Schlittler and the Yankees in the Subway Series opener. After a hot stretch that saw them sweep the Detroit Tigers, the Mets' bats went quiet, managing just five hits against a dominant Yankees starter.
Schlittler was simply unhittable for most of the night. The right-hander allowed just one run—a seventh-inning solo home run by Juan Soto—and surrendered only two hits over 6.2 innings. He leaned heavily on his 97-mph fastball, racking up nine strikeouts and exiting at 106 pitches after walking Brett Baty. With a 1.35 ERA, Schlittler is making an early case for AL Cy Young Award favorite.
Clay Holmes, meanwhile, struggled with command throughout his shortest outing of the season. The right-hander lasted just 4.1 innings, throwing 95 pitches while allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks. His command issues were compounded in the fourth inning when he was hit on the foot by a line drive from Spencer Jones; he appeared to limp slightly as he headed to the dugout after being pulled. Holmes' ERA jumped from 1.86 to 2.39.
The Yankees broke through in the third inning, stringing together four straight hits off Holmes' mistake sinkers. Ben Rice and Aaron Judge each singled to right, then Cody Bellinger showed off his two-strike approach by reaching down for a low curveball and hooking it down the right field line to put New York ahead. The rally pushed the Yanks to a 3-0 lead, and they never looked back.
For Mets fans, this game was a reminder that even the hottest streaks can cool off quickly in the heat of a Subway Series. The bats will need to regroup quickly if they want to even the series and keep pace in the division race.
