Every 162-game season has its off days, and for the 2026 Mets, Wednesday was a prime example. The team's four-game win streak came to a screeching halt with a 7-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks, a game where the Mets were simply outplayed in every facet.

Starter David Peterson, looking to build on his season debut, instead found immediate trouble. After a first-inning run, the second inning unraveled completely. Consecutive singles, a sacrifice bunt, and a walk loaded the bases for Ketel Marte, whose RBI single opened the floodgates. Corbin Carroll followed with a two-run double, and a Geraldo Perdomo sac fly made it a swift 5-0 deficit, a hole the Mets' offense couldn't begin to climb out of.

To his credit, Peterson settled in, tossing scoreless frames in the third, fourth, and fifth. But the damage was done. The Mets' bats, meanwhile, were stifled by Diamondbacks starter Ryne Nelson, whose dominant four-seam fastball led to 5.2 innings of one-run ball and five strikeouts.

The Mets managed a few threats, putting two on in the fourth and scratching a run across in the sixth thanks to a Bo Bichette lead-off double. But the rally never materialized into the big inning they desperately needed. In a game that demanded resilience, the Mets' performance fell flat, serving as a stark reminder that even promising streaks can hit a wall when all three phases fail to click.
