The New York Mets had a strong offseason, adding high-profile talent in hopes of making 2026 far more memorable than the way last season ended. However, the regular season has not been kind to New York, as they currently sit among the worst teams in baseball.
“The losing streak is over. The Mets win their first game since April 7, snapping their skid after 12 games in Juan Soto's return from the injured list. The bad news for the Mets: Francisco Lindor exited the game with left calf tightness,” ESPN’s Jorge Castillo wrote
New York is now searching for ways to salvage its season. If the Mets want to change the trajectory of their year, they will likely need to make moves that inject new energy into the clubhouse. One potential move is a reunion with former Met Luis Severino.
“Severino hasn't been great so far this season. He has a 6.20 ERA in five starts. But, he has a 3.97 career ERA. The Athletics have been good as well, but that has been the case despite Severino struggling,” SI’s Patrick McAvoy wrote.
Severino was interested in signing a new contract with the Mets before ultimately joining the Oakland Athletics, but the interest was not mutual at the time.
“Severino, who made 31 starts with a 3.91 ERA for the Mets in 2024, said he was willing to accept a two-year, $40 million deal to stay. The Mets didn’t feel the same, though,” MLB.com’s Theo DeRosa wrote.
Now, that sentiment could change. With Kodai Senga dealing with an injury, the Mets are in need of another reliable arm. A reunion with Severino could make sense as New York looks to recover from a rough start to the season.
Severino is currently on a $67 million contract, which the Mets could realistically take on. He has previously found success as a Gold Glove winner and multiple-time Cy Young finalist, making him a proven option to help stabilize the rotation.
