The New York Mets’ 33-year-old has ended his career following short stints with the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees.

The New York Mets have been dealt another unexpected blow as 33-year-old pitcher Nick Burdi, a six-year MLB veteran, announced his sudden retirement on Tuesday. The news comes at a critical juncture for the team, which is desperately seeking stability amid a season spiraling into crisis.

Burdi, who signed a minor-league deal with the Mets during the offseason, was seen as a potential bullpen reinforcement. With the team currently sitting in last place in all of Major League Baseball, every arm mattered. The Mets had already exhausted their minor-league depth to patch holes, calling up top infield prospect Ronny Mauricio to replace injured star Francisco Lindor, and later adding Vidal Brujan from Triple-A when Mauricio went down.

Burdi's career journey reads like a testament to resilience. A former second-round draft pick, he battled back from thoracic outlet surgery to carve out a major-league career. His stops included stints with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago Cubs, and most recently, the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees. In 2023 with the Red Sox, he appeared in four big-league games, striking out five batters without allowing an earned run. This season, he made 12 appearances for the Yankees before landing with the Mets.

For a team that reloaded with high-profile talent in the offseason—only to see those plans unravel—Burdi's retirement is a quiet but telling reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in baseball. The Mets now face the daunting task of finding new bullpen options as they try to salvage a season that has slipped far from expectations.
