The Mets suffered another major blow as shortstop Ronny Mauricio fractured his thumb on Saturday. The team is already missing Francisco Lindor.

The New York Mets' infield depth has taken another significant hit, as shortstop Ronny Mauricio fractured his left thumb during Saturday night's 4-3 extra-inning loss to the Angels in Anaheim. The injury occurred on a headfirst slide into first base in the top of the seventh inning, further complicating a position already without star Francisco Lindor.

Lindor has been sidelined since April 23 with a right calf strain and isn't expected to be evaluated for another two weeks, leaving the Mets scrambling for answers at shortstop. Manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed that Mauricio will head to the injured list, saying, "It's tough, obviously. You lose your everyday shortstop and the guy that comes up that is getting the everyday opportunity now. Somebody else is going to get an opportunity."

Mauricio was in the midst of his first extended run as an everyday shortstop, and he showed flashes of promise—including a go-ahead solo home run in Friday's win over the Angels. However, the switch-hitter's overall numbers were modest: a .219/.219/.313 slash line with one homer, three runs, two RBI, and 12 strikeouts over 10 games.

In response, Mendoza indicated that Bo Bichette will be in the mix to shift to shortstop, with Bichette adding, "Whatever the team needs." If Bichette moves over from third base, Brett Baty could return to his natural position at the hot corner. The Mets will also need to call up reinforcements from Triple-A Syracuse, where Vidal Brujan and Jackson Cluff both have shortstop experience.

On a brighter note, Jorge Polanco is making progress from a right wrist contusion and Achilles bursitis, recently taking batting practice and ground balls. His return could provide some relief at first base, helping to steady an infield that's suddenly thin on options.
