Lionel Messi has given Argentina fans plenty of reason to dream of back-to-back World Cup glory—but the legendary captain is keeping it real about the challenges ahead. In a candid interview, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner acknowledged that while the Albiceleste faithful have every right to be optimistic, several powerhouse nations are currently "in better shape" as the 2026 tournament approaches.

"There are a lot of guys dealing with injuries or a lack of match fitness," Messi admitted, referencing Argentina's squad depth. "But the truth is, when this group comes together, we've proven we can compete and we always want to win." The 39-year-old icon, who led Inter Miami to MLS glory last season while earning MVP honors, knows that defending a World Cup title is no small feat.

Messi pointed directly at France—the team Argentina edged in that unforgettable 2022 Qatar final—as a top threat. "As of today, France are in great shape again. They have a ton of top-level players," he said. He also tipped Spain and Brazil as serious contenders, called Portugal "very competitive," and reminded fans that traditional European giants Germany and England are always dangerous.

While Messi hasn't officially confirmed his participation in the 2026 World Cup—which runs from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Mexico, and Canada—he made one thing crystal clear: he's not setting an expiration date on his career. "I love playing football, and I'm going to do it until I can't anymore," said the former Barcelona star. "I'm competitive. I like to win at everything—I don't even let my son win at video games."

For Argentina supporters, that competitive fire is exactly what fuels the dream of a second straight crown. But as Messi himself warns, the road runs through some very hungry rivals.
