McLaren’s aggressive Miami upgrade package delivered instant results as Norris comfortably defeated teammate Oscar Piastri in Saturday’s Sprint Race.

In a stunning turn of events at the Miami Grand Prix, Lando Norris and McLaren have finally ended Mercedes' unbeaten streak in the 2026 Formula 1 season, dominating Saturday's Sprint Race with a performance that left fans and rivals alike in awe.

The young British driver, already a World Champion, made it look effortless from the moment the lights went out. Starting from pole position after topping Sprint Qualifying, Norris controlled the 19-lap race with surgical precision, building a comfortable gap over his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri in the sweltering Miami heat.

"It was a good race, nice to be back on the top step – even if it's a Sprint," Norris said with his trademark grin. "A massive job by the team for bringing the updates, ours have really helped this weekend, I'm happy to get it done for the team."

And he wasn't exaggerating. McLaren arrived in Miami with an aggressive upgrade package for their MCL40, and the results were immediate. After a somewhat lackluster start to the season, the updates have transformed the car's performance, putting the team back in the championship conversation.

Mercedes had been flawless through the opening three rounds in Australia, China, and Japan, but the enforced break due to cancellations in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia seems to have disrupted their momentum. While McLaren and Ferrari brought substantial updates to Miami, Mercedes opted for a more conservative approach – and it showed.

Norris's victory also continues McLaren's love affair with the Miami circuit. It was here that he claimed his breakthrough maiden win in 2024, followed by the Sprint Race victory in 2025, while Piastri triumphed in the grand prix just 12 months ago. The team clearly knows how to get the job done in South Florida.

The race wasn't without drama behind the leader. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli, starting from the front row, suffered a poor getaway – a recurring issue this season – dropping to fourth behind Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. The young Mercedes driver then found himself in a tense battle with teammate George Russell, trading positions mid-race before ultimately finishing fourth. However, a post-race five-second time penalty for exceeding track limits dropped him to sixth, adding insult to injury.

For McLaren, this victory is more than just a trophy – it's a statement. After playing catch-up in the early rounds, the team has served notice that they're ready to fight for the championship. And for Norris, it's another reminder of why he wears the crown.
