The basketball world is in mourning following the sudden passing of Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke at the age of 29. The team, along with his agency Priority Sports and the NBA, confirmed the heartbreaking news on Tuesday, though specific details surrounding his death have not yet been released.
Clarke's agents expressed their profound grief on social media, stating they were "beyond devastated" by the loss. The young forward had recently faced legal troubles, having been arrested on April 1 in Arkansas for speeding and possession of a controlled substance believed to be kratom—an herbal supplement often used as an alternative pain remedy that remains legal in Tennessee. He was released on bond the following day.
Drafted 21st overall out of Gonzaga in 2019, Clarke's NBA journey began when the Oklahoma City Thunder traded his rights to the Grizzlies, who had just selected Ja Morant with the second pick. The duo quickly made an impact, with Clarke earning a spot on the NBA's All-Rookie team in 2020 alongside Morant. His energetic play and high-flying dunks made him a fan favorite in Memphis, earning him a multiyear contract extension in October 2022.
However, Clarke's career was plagued by injuries. He suffered a torn left Achilles tendon on March 3, 2023, during a pivotal Western Conference showdown against the Denver Nuggets. Over the past three seasons, injuries limited him to just 72 of a possible 246 games, including only two appearances in the current season. His untimely passing leaves a void in the Grizzlies organization and the broader NBA community, as fans remember him not just for his on-court contributions but for the spirit he brought to the game.
