Get ready, sports fans! The Maple City is about to host a monumental celebration of athletic excellence. The 50th annual Hornell Sports Night is set for Saturday, April 18th at The Main Place, and the guest list is nothing short of spectacular. This milestone event promises an unforgettable evening, bringing legendary names from the professional and collegiate ranks to honor the incredible talent rising right here in our local communities.

Headlining this special golden anniversary edition is none other than college basketball Hall of Famer Jim Boeheim. The iconic former Syracuse coach will be joined by a roster of pro sports greats, including former Buffalo Bills powerhouse running back Willis McGahee, World Series champion pitcher and former Hornell Dodger Tim Hudson, and U.S. Women's National Soccer Team legend and National Hall of Famer Kristine Lilly. It's a lineup that truly has something for every sports enthusiast.

Beyond the star power, the heart of Hornell Sports Night remains its commitment to local youth sports. The event is a major fundraiser supporting organizations across the Canisteo Valley, making it a celebration with a purpose. Tickets for this can't-miss evening are $85 and are available for cash purchase at the Hornell Wegmans Service Desk from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The night will also shine a spotlight on the next generation of champions with the presentation of the annual athlete of the year awards. This year's honorees exemplify the dedication and multi-sport prowess that define true competitors.

Hornell High School senior Selena Maldonado has been named the Female Athlete of the Year. Her athletic journey is remarkable, having competed nationally in the NFL Punt, Pass & Kick competition as a youth. A five-sport varsity athlete, Maldonado is on track to earn an astounding 20 varsity letters by graduation. On the basketball court, she cemented her legacy as a 1,000-point scorer while setting school records for assists and steals—a testament to her all-around game.

The Male Athlete of the Year honor goes to Arkport Central School senior Conor Smith. A true team player across four sports, Smith was a key member of Arkport's 2024 state championship baseball team. His athletic versatility and commitment extend to the football field, soccer pitch, and wrestling mat. Furthermore, Smith's dedication isn't limited to competition; he is also deeply invested in giving back to his community, rounding out the profile of a well-rounded leader.

This 50th edition is more than a banquet; it's a testament to a half-century of celebrating sportsmanship, achievement, and community spirit. It's where legendary careers and promising futures intersect for one inspiring night.
