Olympique de Marseille's season has hit another turbulent patch, and Sporting Director Medhi Benatia is taking decisive action. Following a disappointing defeat to FC Lorient, Benatia has called for a collective "lockdown" at the club, demanding his players refocus entirely during this critical period.
The loss was particularly stinging as it came after a dedicated week-long training camp in Marbella. Speaking to reporters, Benatia revealed a drastic measure: he has asked the squad to clear their personal schedules for the next four weeks to spend extensive time together at the club's training ground, La Commanderie.
“I asked the players not to plan anything for four weeks,” Benatia stated. “We’re going to spend a lot of time together, morning and afternoon, to work.” His frustration was palpable as he questioned the return on investment from recent efforts. “We organise training camps to build connections and to work — that costs the club money — and yet nothing changes on the pitch.”
Drawing a stark comparison, Benatia emphasized the need for greater commitment. “There are people who work from 7am to 7pm for much less than us. So if we need to push ourselves and be together more, we will.”
Despite the recent collapse, the stakes remain incredibly high. Marseille are still in contention for a coveted UEFA Champions League spot, a goal that demands immediate improvement. Benatia's message is clear: complacency is not an option. “We have to stay alive every day,” he insisted. “But we cannot accept performances like this.” The coming weeks will be a true test of the squad's mentality and resilience.
