Justin Rose has been enjoying a remarkable resurgence over the past couple of years, re-establishing himself as one of golf's most formidable competitors. The 45-year-old Englishman came agonizingly close to winning The Masters in 2025, after pushing Xander Schauffele all the way at The Open Championship in 2024. He then captured the FedEx St. Jude Championship at the end of last year, before running away with the Farmers Insurance Open title at Torrey Pines back in February. Rose also played a lead role for the European team at the Ryder Cup in September, further cementing his comeback story.
However, Rose shocked the golf world two weeks ago when he made a mid-season switch to McLaren irons, just ahead of the busiest and most important stretch of the season. The timing seemed completely bizarre, especially given his recent form. Now, McLaren has been urged to offer an olive branch to the Englishman, as his new equipment has gotten off to a rocky start.
Interestingly, Brandel Chamblee speculated that Rose's irons might actually be his old ones with a McLaren stamp on them. But that theory seems far off, as his new irons look completely different from the set he used during his hot streak. Johnson Wagner recently weighed in on the switch while speaking on Golf on CBS, and his reaction was telling.
"Absolutely. I think it has a lot to do with decimal points, but that's what he does with his body," Wagner insisted. "That's what he does with his health. He got a truck. He drives around to get any little advantage he can, that's what he does. And to make this decision, mid-year, it's one thing if you do it after the playoffs. And then in September, you go through the process, and you go through different irons and grinds, and whatever it is. But to make the switch in the middle of the biggest stretch of golf of the year, it's shocking."
Wagner added that he spoke with Rose at Quail Hollow last week, and the golfer admitted his stats have improved since those first two days at Doral. But the question remains: why make such a risky move now? Clearly, the relationship with McLaren is important to him, but with the season's biggest events looming, many are wondering if the gamble will pay off.
