Zach McKinstry made a memorable first impression in his Triple-A debut on Saturday, launching a home run in an otherwise quiet offensive showing as the Toledo Mud Hens fell 5-3 to the Columbus Clippers.

The infielder's fourth-inning blast, with Max Burt aboard, was the only extra-base hit of the game for Toledo. It was a bright spot in a contest where the Mud Hens managed six other hits but struggled to string together rallies. Their best opportunity came in the second inning, when Andrew Navigato brought Eduardo Valencia home with a sacrifice fly to give Toledo an early lead.

Top prospect Max Clark contributed in that frame as well, reaching on a base hit to shortstop that turned into a throwing error, advancing everyone an extra base. Clark finished the day with just that one hit, but his speed and instincts were on display.

On the mound, starter Bryan Sammons battled through 4⅔ innings, surrendering three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks. The Clippers did most of their damage in the second inning, collecting three of their eight hits. Maick Collado doubled to tie the game, and Juan Benamin followed with an RBI single to put Columbus ahead. While Sammons' fastball velocity was down and his whiff rate dipped below 20%, he managed to keep the game within reach, leaving with the score tied after yielding a homer in the fifth.

Konnor Pilkington took the loss in relief, allowing the go-ahead run on a Collado sacrifice fly in the sixth. Tyler Mattison surrendered a solo homer in the seventh, and Tanner Rainey worked around a leadoff walk in the eighth to keep the deficit manageable.

Despite the loss, McKinstry's debut was a silver lining. With injuries mounting in Detroit, his ability to produce at the plate and in the field — including a defensive gem that drew praise on social media — is a welcome sight for Tigers fans looking ahead.

The Mud Hens will look to take the series lead when they face Columbus again on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. ET. Notably, John Peck did not play Saturday, so the home run watch remains on hold for now. Instead, it was Andrew Jenkins and Brett Callahan providing the power for Erie in their action earlier in the day.
