McInnes on mentality, 'problematic' Motherwell & message to players

Derek McInnes has been speaking to the media before Hearts' crucial Premiership trip to face Motherwell on Saturday. McInnes insists no one should question the mentality of his players as they bid to complete a stunning title win. "I think anybody who actually questions the mentality now hasn't been watching us," he says.

Derek McInnes has been speaking to the media ahead of Hearts' crucial Premiership clash against Motherwell on Saturday—a game that could be a defining moment in their title charge. The manager is clear: don't question his team's mentality.

"If anyone doubts the mentality now, they haven't been watching us," McInnes insists. "At Hearts, you don't reach 76 points with three games left without a strong mindset. There's pressure here, an expectation to win, and our players have answered that time and again."

Hearts are riding high after Monday night's "big win" over Rangers, but McInnes has already shifted focus. "As soon as you have your shower after the game, it's all about Motherwell," he says. The Steelmen have been a thorn in Hearts' side this season, with two draws and a defeat from their three meetings. "We have to be honest—in all three games, they could have beaten us," McInnes admits.

Motherwell, he notes, are a "problematic" opponent that "constantly test your organisation." He adds: "They look like a team that enjoys playing and what they've been asked to do. But they also have very good players—sometimes that gets overlooked. It's not just about being well-coached; they have quality."

With a potential title-clinching moment as early as Wednesday, McInnes is keeping his players grounded. "Who knows how big a step this is? It's just three points. We can't get obsessed with all the different scenarios—what happens if we win and they win? That's not our thinking. I have no time for it. The message to the players is simple: concentrate and try to win against Motherwell."

On the injury front, Cammy Devlin and Harry Milne are "quietly getting there" and could be available for Saturday, while Craig Gordon has returned to light training. McInnes also took a moment to praise his squad and staff after winning his second manager of the year award, underscoring the collective effort behind Hearts' remarkable season.
