Iowa men's basketball head coach Ben McCollum just landed a major payday—and it's well deserved. After leading the Hawkeyes to their first Elite Eight appearance since 1987, McCollum signed a new six-year contract that includes an immediate $1 million raise.
According to the contract, obtained Monday by The Associated Press, McCollum will earn $4.35 million for the 2026-27 season, up from $3.35 million last year. The deal includes annual $100,000 raises through 2031-32, rewarding the coach for a historic turnaround in just his first season in Iowa City.
McCollum's bonus structure remains largely unchanged, with incentives tied to Big Ten regular-season or tournament championships, NCAA Tournament appearances and advancement, players' academic performance, and coaching honors. It's a vote of confidence from the athletic department—and a smart investment in a coach who's already delivered results.
The buyout clause is notable: McCollum would owe the university $5 million if he leaves before April 1, 2027, dropping to $4 million before April 1, 2028, and decreasing to $2.5 million by the third year. That's a clear sign Iowa wants to lock him in for the long haul.
In his debut season, McCollum guided the Hawkeyes to a 24-13 overall record and a 10-10 mark in Big Ten play. But it was March where the magic really happened. Iowa knocked off three higher-seeded teams in the NCAA Tournament: Clemson, defending national champion Florida, and Nebraska. The Cinderella run finally ended with a 71-59 loss to Illinois in the regional final in Houston.
“This extension reflects not only our recent success, but the strong alignment we have with Coach McCollum’s vision for Iowa basketball,” athletic director Beth Goetz said. “The culture he and his staff have developed, the way they represent our institution, and the connection created with the Hawkeye community have been incredibly meaningful.”
McCollum joined legendary coach Tom Davis as the only first-year men's basketball coach in Iowa history to win at least 20 games and reach the Elite Eight. The 24 wins also tied for fifth-most in a single season at the school.
It's been a rapid rise for McCollum, who spent 15 seasons at Division II Northwest Missouri State before a one-year stint at Drake in 2024-25. He left Drake after just one season to take the Iowa job—and in two Division I seasons, he's already 55-17 with four NCAA Tournament wins. For Hawkeyes fans, this contract is a signal that the best may be yet to come.
