In a thrilling finish to their Championship campaign, Swansea City ended the season on a high note with a dramatic 3-1 victory over Charlton Athletic, prompting head coach Vitor Matos to shower praise on his standout performers.
The match came alive in the final 20 minutes when substitute Adam Idah broke the deadlock with a crisp finish, only for Charlton's Miles Leaburn to level the score just five minutes later. But the Swans showed incredible resilience, with Idah quickly bagging his second goal before Leo Walta—who entered the game early after Melker Widell's injury—sealed the win with a stunning late free-kick.
Idah's double was a particularly sweet moment in what has been a challenging debut season at Swansea. The Republic of Ireland international, who joined for £6 million from Celtic last September, has largely played second fiddle to Zan Vipotnik and endured a three-month layoff with a hamstring injury. Despite those setbacks, he finishes the season as the club's second-top scorer with six goals in 25 Championship appearances—though only six of those were starts.
"I think he has done brilliantly after his return from injury in March," Matos said. "He came back, went with his national team, and then his first game for us against Sheffield United, he came off the bench and scored. I am really happy for him—he has a good scoring record."
The Swansea boss is clearly excited about Idah's potential, especially with a full pre-season on the horizon. "He has a lot of things to offer. His physicality and presence are really good. He needed to adapt to our style, to be more involved without the ball and develop a clearer idea of how to press. But he's buying into that, and it gives him nice energy. When we have a pre-season and he starts, we can count on him—he will be a massive player for us."
Meanwhile, Walta's brilliant free-kick was his first goal since joining on loan from IK Sirius in January—a move that will become permanent this summer. The 22-year-old Finland international has taken time to settle in the Championship, but against Charlton, he delivered his best performance in a Swansea shirt. "It was a brilliant free-kick," Matos added, highlighting the young midfielder's growing influence.
For Swansea fans, this late-season flourish offers a glimpse of what's to come—a team with fight, emerging talent, and plenty of reason for optimism heading into the summer break.
