Marsh blitz earns Lucknow big win and dents Chennai IPL playoff hopes

Mitchell Marsh deflated Chennai Super Kings with a blazing knock of 90 off 38 balls as the playoff chasers were blown away by Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League on Friday. Nicholas Pooran finished off Chennai with four consecutive sixes against Anshul Kamboj for Lucknow to cruise to 188-3 and a win by seven wickets with more than three overs to spare. Chennai put up 187-5 in what appeared to be an over-par total.

In a stunning display of power-hitting, Mitchell Marsh single-handedly dismantled Chennai Super Kings' playoff hopes with a breathtaking 90 off just 38 balls, leading Lucknow Super Giants to a dominant seven-wicket victory in the Indian Premier League on Friday.

Chasing what seemed a daunting target of 188, Marsh launched an all-out assault from the very first over. The Australian all-rounder tore into young pacer Anshul Kamboj during the powerplay, smashing four consecutive sixes and a boundary in a jaw-dropping 28-run over that left the Chennai bowlers shell-shocked. Kamboj's figures would end up a nightmare 0-63 from just 2.4 overs.

Marsh's explosive knock featured seven sixes and nine boundaries, forming a blistering 135-run opening partnership with Josh Inglis (36) that effectively sealed the match for Lucknow. The duo's aggressive approach put the home side within touching distance of victory before both fell in successive deliveries in the 12th over—Inglis caught at deep point and Marsh run out after a deflection off bowler Mukesh Choudhary.

But the damage was already done. Nicholas Pooran provided the perfect finishing touch, launching Kamboj for four consecutive sixes to seal the win with more than three overs to spare, finishing at 188-3.

Earlier, Chennai posted what appeared to be a competitive 187-5, powered by Kartik Sharma's fluent 71 off 42 balls and impact player Shivam Dube's unbeaten 16-ball cameo of 32. However, the total proved insufficient against Lucknow's aggressive batting display.

The loss deals a significant blow to Chennai's playoff aspirations, leaving them stranded in sixth place after missing a golden opportunity to break into the top four. For Lucknow, already eliminated from playoff contention, the victory provided a moment of pride for their home fans, marking just their fourth win in 12 games this season.
