Marquette women's basketball is making a strategic move to bolster its coaching staff ahead of a pivotal offseason. Head coach Cara Consuegra announced on Tuesday the hiring of Sheila Boykin as a new assistant coach, a key addition as the program looks to build its roster and identity.

Boykin arrives in Milwaukee after a season at the University of South Florida, bringing valuable experience from multiple coaching stops. Her journey includes a season at Loyola-Chicago, two years as a full assistant at Cal State Northridge, and a graduate assistant role at San Diego State. This diverse background provides her with a well-rounded perspective to contribute immediately.

Perhaps her most significant asset is her high-level playing experience. Boykin was a four-year player at LSU from 2011 to 2015, competing in 113 games in the tough SEC and earning a starting role as a senior. As a 6'2" forward, her expertise is expected to be invaluable in developing Marquette's post players—a crucial need as Consuegra works to fill a roster that currently has ten open spots.

This hire comes at a dynamic time in college basketball, with the transfer portal in full swing. Boykin's recent experience at USF, which underwent a coaching change this spring, gives her direct insight into managing roster transitions, a skill that will be essential at Marquette this summer.

While the official announcement did not specify, this move appears to fill the vacancy left by assistant Chaia Meier, who recently became the head coach at Bradley. For Golden Eagles fans, the addition of Sheila Boykin signals a proactive step by Consuegra to assemble a staff capable of navigating a rebuild and competing in the Big East. The focus now shifts to the roster, where her developmental skills will be put to the test.
