As the Oklahoma City Thunder prepare for their highly anticipated Round 2 clash against the Los Angeles Lakers, all eyes are on star forward Jalen Williams and his recovery from a nagging hamstring strain. Head coach Mark Daigneault provided an encouraging—but cautious—update on Saturday, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.
Williams has battled through a challenging 2025-26 season, missing 49 games due to two wrist surgeries and two hamstring strains. When the playoffs tipped off, he managed just two games before suffering yet another hamstring injury in Game 2 against the Phoenix Suns. The Thunder swept that series, but Williams has been sidelined ever since.
"He's chipping away at his rehab," Daigneault said at Saturday's practice. "He's doing a good job." The team has listed Williams as week-to-week, but with 14 days between his initial injury and Game 1 against the Lakers, there's cautious optimism. Social media medical experts suggest that timeline could be enough for a Grade 1 hamstring strain—though the Thunder are taking no chances.
Interestingly, Williams isn't the only star dealing with a hamstring issue in this series. Luka Doncic remains out with a Grade 2 strain, having missed a month of action, and is expected to be unavailable for the start of the series. That could shift the balance in OKC's favor, especially if Williams can return to action.
In his absence, the Thunder have shown remarkable resilience. Chet Holmgren and Ajay Mitchell stepped up big time in Games 3 and 4 against the Suns, while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander shouldered even more of the offensive load. If Williams isn't ready for Game 1, expect OKC to lean on that same formula—and for the team's depth to be tested once again.
For now, Thunder fans will have to wait and see. But if Williams can suit up, it could be the spark that propels Oklahoma City past the Lakers and deeper into the 2026 playoffs.
