College football's financial landscape is undergoing a seismic shift, and Miami head coach Mario Cristobal isn't mincing words about the chaos. As the revenue-sharing era approaches its one-year mark, roster costs are skyrocketing—and Cristobal believes the system lacks any real guardrails.

"We're about as far away from structure as you can possibly be," Cristobal said on The Triple Option podcast. "The market is set by whatever the market thinks it's supposed to be at."

And that market is getting expensive fast. On3's Pete Nakos reported that by 2026, some rosters could hit $40 million. Michigan's Kyle Whittingham even floated the possibility of $50 million rosters in the near future. Alabama GM Courtney Morgan echoed that sentiment, telling Front Office Sports that national title contenders are already spending at that level—though Indiana's Curt Cignetti pushed back, insisting the Hoosiers didn't come close to that number last season.

Cristobal, who led Miami to the national title game last year with a roster costing roughly $30 million, admits he's struggling to separate fact from fiction in this new environment.

"I don't know what the numbers are. I don't know what's real, I don't know what's fake," he said. "There's so many reports, social media, 14,780 shows and podcasts. It's information overflow—you just don't know what's real or not."

For fans and players alike, the message is clear: college football's NIL era is still finding its footing. And until there's more structure, expect the spending—and the speculation—to keep climbing.
