When the New York Mets shipped Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers for Marcus Semien during the offseason, it looked like a classic win-now move on paper. But one month into the 2026 season, that trade has become a glaring red flag in Queens.

Semien, brought in under the banner of "run prevention," has been anything but a savior. Through the first month of action, he's slashing a dismal .218/.275/.291 with just one home run and nine RBIs. To put that in perspective, his OPS+ sits at 67—well below the league average of 100. Meanwhile, Nimmo is thriving in Texas, posting a .290/.364/.460 line with four homers and 12 RBIs, good for a 144 OPS+.

The numbers get worse when you dig deeper. Semien's max exit velocity has dropped nearly 10 mph from last season, and his pull rate—a key component of his offensive game—has completely collapsed. Opposing pitchers have taken notice, throwing him a first-pitch strike a staggering 78% of the time. He's constantly playing catch-up, and it shows.

Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller recently tagged Semien as the Mets' "least valuable player," and it's hard to argue. While New York has a handful of struggling stars, Semien is the one they specifically traded Nimmo for. And right now, that decision is haunting a Mets team that already owns the worst record in baseball.

Of course, Semien isn't the sole reason for New York's slow start, but he's certainly not helping.
