Manchester United Women's hopes of qualifying for European competition next season have been dealt a devastating blow after a frustrating 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion at Leigh Sports Village.

The result leaves Marc Skinner's side facing an uphill battle to secure a top-four finish, with only one game remaining in the campaign.

Brighton started brightly and nearly took the lead when Caitlin Haynes headed over from a corner. The visitors continued to press, and Jelena Čanković tested United goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce with a looping effort that sailed just over the crossbar.

United gradually grew into the game, and their first real chance came through Melvine Malard. The French forward showcased her pace down the left flank, cutting inside before unleashing a powerful strike that forced a fine save from the Brighton keeper.

However, it was Brighton who struck first blood in the 39th minute. A costly error from Tullis-Joyce saw her poor pass fail to reach Hinata Miyazawa, allowing Čanković to pounce. The midfielder rounded the stranded goalkeeper and slotted into an empty net to give the Seagulls a deserved lead.

United almost responded instantly before the break. Ella Toone's dangerous hanging cross caught Brighton goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie out of position, but the ball agonizingly crashed against the crossbar. The half-time whistle blew with United trailing and facing an uphill battle.

The Red Devils came out with renewed purpose after the restart. Malard's superb cross-field pass found Jess Park, who drove at the Brighton defense but dragged her left-footed effort just wide of the target.

Brighton nearly doubled their advantage when a teasing ball into the box was narrowly missed by Madison Haley. United substitute Ellen Wangerheim thought she had equalized with her first goal for the club, but the flag was raised for offside.

With time running out, Skinner introduced German striker Lea Schüller from the bench, and she proved to be the hero. Deep into stoppage time, Malard's deflected cross fell kindly to Schüller, who showed exceptional instinct to half-volley the ball into the corner of the net, sparking wild celebrations.

The dramatic 94th-minute equalizer spared United from defeat, but it was a case of too little, too late for their European aspirations. The draw leaves their chances of qualifying for continental competition hanging by a thread.

United will conclude their season on Saturday, May 16th, with a daunting trip to league leaders Chelsea. Nothing less than a victory will do if they are to keep their slim European hopes alive.
