Malik Willis is used to hitting his targets on the football field, but his ceremonial first pitch at a Miami Marlins game? Let's just say it was a different story.
The Miami Dolphins quarterback, who joined the team this offseason after a stint with the Green Bay Packers, took the mound on May 1 ahead of the Marlins' matchup against the Phillies. Unfortunately, his throw had more in common with a wayward pass than a strike—sailing well past the catcher and likely hitting the backstop on the fly. Social media was quick to react, with fans noting he "missed his open receiver by a few yards."
For Dolphins fans, there's hope that Willis will be far more accurate when he's actually under center. The 25-year-old signed a three-year, $67.5 million deal this offseason and has been impressive as a backup quarterback for the Packers over the last two seasons. Now, he'll be working under new Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley, a former Packers defensive coordinator, to sharpen his game.
And if Willis needs any consolation, he's not alone in his baseball struggles. Packers QB1 Jordan Love also threw a ceremonial first pitch a bit high at the Brewers' season opener earlier this year—though his catcher managed to haul it in. Sometimes, even the best arms need a little practice on the diamond.
