Henri Veesaar’s decision to stay in the NBA Draft meant that Michael Malone’s first team at UNC was still missing a starting-caliber center; Malone did well to secure commitments from Maxim Logue and Cade Bennerman, but both project more as backup or depth than as somebody who can play 30 minutes a night for a team that wants to compete at the highest level. On Tuesday, Malone secured a commitment from a player who might be able to fill that hole: international center prospect Sayon Keita. Jonathon Givony of DraftExpress seems to have had it first:

NEWS: Sayon Keita has committed to UNC, Gersh Sports tells DraftExpress. The 7-foot, 18-year-old Mali native is a projected 2027 lottery pick, oozing talent as a finisher, passer, offensive rebounder and shot-blocker, with a 7'5 wingspan.Huge talent injection for Mike Malone. pic.twitter.com/bUsu4WPZfu

Keita, originally from Mali, is an 18-year old currently in the FC Barcelona system. The 6’11 center has only been playing basketball seriously for about 4 years, but he’s already got a lot of eyes on him and his future. He first got on American radars, both college and professional, at the NBPA Top 100 camp last June — he earned Defensive MVP honors by averaging better than 3 blocks per game over the week, and looked pretty good on the offensive end as well. He had some college interest last year, including from UNC, but ultimately went back to Spain to develop. He’s gotten on the floor occasionally for Barcelona’s A-team while averaging 9 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per game in U-22 play, according to Inside Carolina.

The big man’s length immediately stands out. With a reported 7’5 wingspan, Keita is easily able to block shots around the rim even if he’s on the other side of the paint from the shooter; he’s got a little bit of John Henson in how he’s able to get a hand on shots without leaving his assignment. He’s also a good athlete and a very willing rim-runner, which should endear him quickly to UNC fans. He doesn’t have a super fine-tuned offensive repertoire; most of his offense comes on dunks and layups. I saw him throw in a couple of hook shots with either hand, but I’m not sure that’s going to be a consistent part of his game right away. He is a more polished passer than I expected for a player who hasn’t been playing basketball for that long — passing can be the last thing that a big man prospect develops, but he’s already far from a black hole and working with Michael Malone should only help further that. And he definitely has to develop physically, he’s very noticeably skinny on the court and that could be a hindrance to the things he does well on both ends when he’s going up against guys who are more physically mature than him. Certainly he has practice going up against grown men with his time in La Liga and the EuroLeague, but practice is going to have to turn into competence and excellence pretty soon if he and UNC are to get what they want out of this marriage.

That said, Keita is already a very good player who was on a lot of early 2027 NBA mock drafts for good reason. He’s not a finished product either physically or in terms of basketball, but that doesn’t make him not ready to play. This addition goes a long way towards filling out Malone’s first team.
