Male Spotlight Athlete of the Week | John Allen

Name: John Allen School: Westmont Hilltop Age: 17 Grade: 12 Sports: Tennis, golf and swimming Parents: Gregory and Cynthia Allen, of Upper Yoder Township Athletic achievements: In tennis, four-year letterman, four-time District 6 Class 2A team champions, 2026 District 6 Class 2A doubles champion and singles runner-up, two-time district doubles runner-up, 2025 outstanding singles award and 2024 ...

Meet John Allen, the Westmont Hilltop senior who’s redefining what it means to be a multi-sport athlete. At just 17 years old, this standout competitor has already carved out an impressive legacy on the tennis court, golf course, and in the swimming pool—and he’s showing no signs of slowing down.

John’s tennis resume is nothing short of stellar: a four-year letterman and a four-time District 6 Class 2A team champion. He claimed the 2026 District 6 Class 2A doubles title and finished as singles runner-up, adding to his two district doubles runner-up finishes. His consistency earned him the 2025 outstanding singles award and the 2024 outstanding doubles award. In swimming, he’s been equally dominant—a four-year letterman, four-time District 6 qualifier, and part of the 2026 District 6 Class 2A 200-yard medley relay champions. And in golf, he’s a three-year letterman, showcasing his versatility across three demanding sports.

His coach sums it up perfectly: “John has been one of the most consistent and motivated players I’ve ever coached. He has an overpowering serve and can place the ball anywhere on the court. Over the past few years, he’s developed into one of the best players in the area. He’s a great role model for younger players, showing maturity and confidence every time he plays. His demeanor and mental toughness on and off the court are traits that can’t be taught. He’s always been a team leader, and we’ll miss him dearly.”

Off the field, John’s interests are just as diverse. He’s taking flying lessons, loves cooking, works out regularly, and enjoys woodworking. His favorite song? “Broken Window Serenade” by Whiskey Myers. And when he’s not competing, he looks up to pro tennis star Carlos Alcaraz—a fitting inspiration for a player who blends power with finesse.

John credits his parents as the most influential people in his athletic career and says his proudest achievement is finishing second in district singles, first in district doubles and team tournament, and first in the district in the 200 medley relay—all in the same year. He got his start thanks to encouragement from his sister, who currently plays college tennis at Mount Aloysius.

Looking ahead, John plans to attend St. Vincent College, where he’ll major in aviation management and join the men’s tennis team. His ultimate goal? To become a commercial airline pilot. With his drive, discipline, and talent, there’s no doubt he’ll soar to new heights—both in the air and on the court.
