Italian football legend Paolo Maldini, speaking at the Italian Open tennis tournament in Rome, has drawn a sharp contrast between the success of Italian tennis and the struggles of Italian football—pointing to one key factor: planning.

"Having the world number one certainly increases interest in the sport, but having so many Italians in the top 100 now is not a fluke," Maldini told news agency ANSA, referencing Jannik Sinner's rise to the top of the tennis rankings. "There was planning in this sport, what was lacking in football, because Italy has always been a nation of talent in sport."

The Milan legend's comments come as Italian tennis enjoys a golden era, with multiple players breaking into the global elite—a stark contrast to the inconsistency that has plagued Italian football in recent years. For Maldini, the lesson is clear: success doesn't happen by accident.

His remarks have naturally fueled speculation about a potential role within the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), especially after President Gabriele Gravina's resignation opened the door for new leadership. While figures like Giovanni Malagò and Giancarlo Abete have been mentioned as potential candidates who might bring Maldini on board, the 57-year-old former defender remained tight-lipped when pressed on the matter.

Maldini knows a thing or two about high-level sports management. He served as AC Milan's technical director from 2019 until his dismissal in 2023 following disagreements with the club's hierarchy. His experience at the highest levels of both playing and executive roles makes his observations particularly weighty—and his silence on a FIGC position speaks volumes.

For fans of Italian sport, Maldini's message is a rallying cry: talent alone isn't enough. It's the long-term vision and structure behind the scenes that truly separates champions from contenders.
