PSG head coach Luis Enrique had heavily rotated his squad against Lyon, and it backfired. The Parisian coach's choices are sparking debate.
Yes, Paris Saint-Germain has entered an infernal stretch with three matches per week, but Nasser Al-Khelaifi gave Enrique the squad he wanted.
On Sunday, upon reading the European champions' starting eleven, some were surprised to see that the Parisian coach was resting players such as Marquinhos, Joao Neves, Ousmane Dembele, and even Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, four usual starters.
Olympique Lyonnais' victory inevitably reignited the debate over Enrique's management of Ligue 1, especially since PSG will host Nantes on Wednesday. In any case, the decisions of the Parisian coach are generating a lot of ink this Monday, and some regret that Paris takes the French championship so lightly. This is notably the case of Jean-Louis Tourre, editor-in-chief of RMC, who is nonetheless a PSG fan.
Afterward, the journalist expressed all the ill he thought of Luis Enrique's behavior during certain matches.
"This PSG team has a tendency to take Ligue 1 lightly, we know it. The match against Monaco was the best possible example of that. In one week, we go from a league match against Monaco, where they take them lightly and get pushed around, to the matches against Chelsea and Liverpool. The players have that tendency easily, but Luis Enrique does as well. Rotations should have been made against Nantes, but not against Lyon," Tourre said.
On social media, Paris Saint-Germain obviously does not escape criticism after this misstep that allows Lens to regain a little hope in the race for the French Champion title. Mohamed Toubache-Ter was incisive against PSG.
"Ligue 1 is a gadget for them, huh. The priority is the UCL, no big deal. Rotating against Nantes and Angers: essential, huh?" the insider wrote.
Among Olympique de Marseille supporters, teeth are also grinding very hard, even if OM also has the art of self-sabotage. After this Lyon victory at the Parc des Princes, Marseille drops to sixth place in the standings, and inevitably, Paris is singled out.
"PSG in Ligue 1 against OM, they are at more than 100 percent, it's a UCL match for them. The other clubs don't give a damn; they play relaxed, lol. But what a crappy championship since the arrival of QSI in 2011, they killed French football," Anthony Payet said.
We will know on Wednesday, after the match against Nantes, if PSG truly failed against Lyon or derailed at the worst moment.
