The LSU Tigers' backcourt is seeing some movement as the offseason gets underway. Veteran guard Kailyn Gilbert has entered the NCAA transfer portal, marking the second Tiger to do so this cycle.
Gilbert, a 5'8" senior, appeared in just five games this past season before taking an extended leave from the team. During her first year in Baton Rouge in 2024-25, however, she was a key rotational piece. Coming off the bench in 37 games, she averaged 9.1 points per game, providing valuable energy by pushing the pace and attacking the rim.
Her journey to find a consistent scoring role has now led her back to the portal. Gilbert began her collegiate career at Arizona, where she broke out as a sophomore averaging 15.1 points per game. Her transfer to LSU last season placed her alongside established stars like Flau'jae Johnson and Mikaylah Williams, making it difficult to replicate that primary scorer role in a crowded and talented lineup.
While losing a veteran is never ideal, the Tigers' championship aspirations remain firmly intact. The program is built to withstand such roster fluctuations, thanks to its deep talent pool and top-tier recruiting. With a strong core expected to return and another elite class coming in, Kim Mulkey's squad is still positioned as a preseason favorite to contend for the national title next year.
