It’s finally official: Iowa transfer forward Alvaro Folgueiras will play for Pat Kelsey at Louisville next season.
Folgueiras, a 6’10 native of Spain, averaged 8.4 points over 21 minutes per game last season with the Hawkeyes while shooting 33% from 3. He made one of the biggest shots in Iowa basketball history in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, when his last-second corner three proved to be the winning basket in the team’s upset of top-seeded Iowa.

Before arriving in Iowa City, Folgueiras earned 2024-25 Horizon League Player of the Year honors when he averaged 14.1 points and 9.1 rebounds per game for league champion Robert Morris. He had played a more limited role for the Colonials as a freshman the year before.
Folgueiras is a reliable shooter with a quick release and a remarkable feel for the game. He makes the right decision nine times out of 10 and is a terrific passer. He lacks athleticism and has been a liability at times defensively, but that will hopefully be less of an issue next season with a rim protector like Flory Bidunga joining him in the frontcourt.
Louisville was in need of a four who can serve as a connector, ball-mover and floor-spacer. They aren’t anymore.
