Jockey Billy Loughnane wins the first Classic race of his career, aged just 20, on Bow Echo in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Billy Loughnane has etched his name into racing history, capturing the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket aboard Bow Echo at just 20 years old. The Irish-born jockey, who burst onto the Flat racing scene at 16 in 2022, delivered a masterful ride to secure his first Classic victory—a moment he called a "dream come true."

This triumph marks Loughnane as the youngest winner of the prestigious race since Donnacha O'Brien, then 19, guided Saxon Warrior to victory in 2018. Guiding the 9-2 chance, Loughnane surged clear of joint 3-1 favorite Gstaad in the closing stages, winning by two and three-quarter lengths. Distant Storm, also at 3-1, finished a distant third, eight lengths behind.

The victory also spotlighted trainer George Boughey, who at 34 became the youngest trainer in the post-war era to win both the 1,000 and 2,000 Guineas. Boughey, who previously won the 1,000 Guineas with Cachet in 2022, was emotional after the race. "His work has been incredibly good," he told ITV Sport. "It's lucky he's as good as what we thought he was."

Nearly 18,000 spectators packed Newmarket for the first Classic of the British Flat racing season, with the going good to firm setting the stage for a thrilling showdown. A 14-strong field spread across the mile-long track, with Bow Echo and Gstaad battling neck and neck before the Night of Thunder colt unleashed a stunning late burst. Bow Echo's promise was evident after an unbeaten two-year-old campaign, and he delivered when it mattered most.

For Loughnane, who broke Kieren Fallon's 2003 record with 222 wins in a single calendar year in 2025, this win represents the pinnacle of a meteoric rise. "I've wanted to be a jockey since the day I was born," he said. "To find a horse like this at 20 years old is a dream come true. I've never had a feeling like that in my life."
