A recap of the seventh game of the 2026 MW Softball Tournament.

The 2026 Mountain West Softball Tournament delivered another instant classic on Day 3, as the Grand Canyon University Lopes once again edged out the New Mexico Lobos—this time with an 11-7 victory to punch their ticket to the championship game.

This wasn't just any rematch. It was a redemption story waiting to be written for the Lobos, the No. 4 seed, who had blown a four-run lead in the bottom of the seventh against the top-seeded Lopes just a day earlier. For GCU, the path was unexpectedly rocky: they had just stumbled into the loser's bracket after a high-scoring loss to Nevada. The stakes couldn't have been higher, and the drama didn't disappoint.

GCU handed the ball to Taryn Batterton, while the Lobos countered with backup pitcher Arianna Capek—a decision that raised eyebrows given the do-or-die nature of the game. Batterton's start was shaky at best. She walked three of her first four batters, threw two wild pitches, and allowed DeNae Vasquez-Dickson to advance to third. She managed to strike out the Lobos' home-run threat Miracle McKenzie, but the damage was done: a two-run double followed, and New Mexico jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the top of the first.

The bottom of the first, however, was pure fireworks. Capek battled Sydney McCray in a 12-pitch at-bat that ended with a walk. After another free pass, GCU's Jada Cooper launched a towering three-run homer—a no-doubter the moment it left the bat. Sensing trouble, the Lobos brought in McKenna Guest, a move many fans had expected from the start. But Guest entered with no outs and a one-run deficit—a tough spot for any pitcher.

Guest couldn't stop the bleeding. She walked Trinity Martin and hit Emily Gonzalez, setting the stage for Addison Shifflett, who crushed another three-run bomb to put the Lopes up 6-2. An RBI from McCray capped off an inning that saw GCU score seven runs on just two hits. The Lobos escaped the inning down 7-2, but the damage was done.

Batterton settled in during the top of the second, allowing two hits and a walk but no runs, thanks in part to a costly Lobos baserunning mistake. From there, GCU's offense kept the pressure on, and while New Mexico fought back to make it 11-7, the Lopes never surrendered the lead.

For fans of tournament softball, this was a masterclass in resilience. The Lopes, now one win away from the championship, showed they can win ugly—and sometimes, that's the mark of a true contender.
