The local track and field season is heating up, with Clatsop County rivals hitting the road for major invitationals. Astoria and Seaside traveled to St. Helens for the competitive Lower Columbia Invitational, while Knappa and Warrenton showcased their talent at the Rob Frank Invitational in Banks.
In a major boost for Seaside, senior sprinter Ryder Jackson made a triumphant return to the track. After recovering from a football-season ankle injury, the state 100-meter dash runner-up clocked an impressive 11.64 in his comeback race, securing second place. His performance signals a strong return to form as the championship season approaches.
The Seaside boys' team saw standout performances across the board. Freshman Gavin Swedenborg announced his arrival with a huge day, setting personal records in both the 200-meter dash (24.27) and the high jump, clearing 5 feet 10 inches for the first time. Meanwhile, freshman William Flores delivered a breakthrough moment in the 800 meters, shattering the two-minute barrier with a time of 1:58.16 to finish second—a massive five-second personal best.
The Seaside girls' squad was equally formidable. The distance medley relay team of Ariana Rojas Mora, Shantelle Mendez Granillo, Kimberly Martinez-Luna, and Maddie Menke dominated their event, winning the 4000-meter race in 14:22.53. In field events, Maddie Menke led the way with third-place finishes in both the pole vault and long jump, showcasing her versatile athleticism.
For Astoria, the distance runners had a standout Saturday. Senior Maurice Mecham powered to a fifth-place finish in the 400 meters, while freshman Turner Boslar continued the trend of young talent making waves, setting a personal best in the 800 meters.
From breakthrough freshmen to returning veterans, local athletes are building momentum. These early-season meets are laying the foundation for what promises to be an exciting championship push, with personal bests falling and team rivalries intensifying under the spring sun.
