Local teams made a powerful statement in the opening round of the CIF-SS boys volleyball playoffs, with Ventura, Camarillo, Foothill Tech, and Oak Park all securing dominant sweeps to advance.
Ventura's Fletcher Duffey stole the spotlight in a thrilling 25-14, 25-18, 25-21 victory over Vista Del Lago in the Division 5 first round. Though he typically plays libero for his club team, the junior has seamlessly transitioned into an outside hitter role for the Cougars—and he delivered a standout performance with nine kills and a team-high 15 digs.
"He is such an explosive player—he really fires the team up when he is out there," Ventura head coach Tim Mays said. "He has done so well at that position."
The defining moment came midway through the third set when a Vista Del Lago spike caught Duffey square in the face near his chin. The ball ricocheted back across the net, but instead of backing down, Duffey stayed aggressive. On the next two passing sequences, the Cougars set him up, and his kill to end the point swung the momentum decisively in Ventura's favor.
"I was willing the ball to come to me," Duffey said. "It is always the best feeling when you get a dig and then get to swing right after. I was like, 'Set me again,' after the first hit and I somehow found a way through the block."
With setter Theo Souther-Pasquarella orchestrating the offense and libero Osvaldo Robles anchoring the defense, Ventura showed the kind of balanced attack that could carry them deep into the playoffs. Jude Curtis also contributed key passes in the back row, while the team celebrated their win by running through a tunnel of cheering fans—a fitting start to what promises to be an exciting postseason run.
